Choosing

Half-round or K-style: choosing a copper gutter profile

· 2 min read · By Alejandro Francisco Garcia, Owner and fabricator

The two profiles drain differently, hang differently and suit different houses. Here is how we help customers choose between them, and what each one means for the rest of the order.

Copper gutter along the top of a terracotta wall, against a deep blue sky

Almost every copper gutter order starts with the same question: half-round or K-style. Both are made in our shop from the same copper sheet, and both last as long as the house. They differ in how they look, how they hang and how much water they carry.

Half-round

Half-round is the older profile: a single curve with a rolled bead along the front edge. It hangs from visible hangers that either screw to the fascia or hook over the roof edge. Because the inside is one smooth curve there are no corners for leaves to settle in, so it drains and self-cleans well.

It suits houses that were built with it, metal roofs, and any house where the gutter is part of the look rather than something to hide. The visible hangers are a feature, not a compromise, and they are made of copper too.

K-style

K-style has a flat back that sits against the fascia and a shaped front, called an ogee, that reads like crown moulding from the ground. It is the profile on most houses built in the last fifty years, so it matches the fascia and the trim most people already have.

For the same width, K-style holds more water than half-round. It is carried on hidden hangers that sit inside the gutter, so from the street you see only the copper.

What the choice changes

The profile decides the rest of the order. Half-round usually pairs with round downspouts and exposed hangers; K-style pairs with rectangular downspouts and hidden hangers. End caps and miters are made for one profile or the other, so the configurator only offers the accessories that fit the gutter you picked.

If you are not sure

Send us two photos: one of the house from the street and one close-up of the fascia and roof edge. We will tell you which profile we would make for it and why, and the answer is sometimes the less expensive one.
