How to measure your house for a copper gutter order

· 2 min read · By Alejandro Francisco Garcia, Owner and fabricator

You need a tape measure, a pencil and ten minutes. This is exactly what to measure and count so the configurator, and our quote, come out right.

A copper gutter order is a list: so many feet of gutter, so many corners, so many ends, so many outlets and downspouts. If the list is right, the pieces fit. This is how to make it.

1. Measure each run

Walk the house and measure every straight stretch of fascia that needs a gutter, from corner to corner or corner to end. Write each one down separately with a note of where it is, such as front, left side, back porch. Round each measurement up to the next foot. Add them together for total linear feet.

2. Count the corners

Where two runs meet at a corner, you need a miter. Count outside corners and inside corners separately, because they are different pieces. On a simple rectangular house that is four outside corners; porches and ells add inside corners.

3. Count the ends

Any end of a run that does not turn a corner or meet another gutter needs an end cap. Walk the house again and count them.

4. Place the downspouts

Decide where water should come down. Each downspout needs one outlet in the gutter, a length of downspout equal to the height from the gutter to the ground, usually two or three elbows and at least two brackets. Measure the drop height at each spot.

5. Hangers

Plan one hanger roughly every two feet along the runs, plus one on each side of every corner and outlet. The configurator lets you add them with the quantity you counted.

Putting it in the configurator

Pick the gutter profile and size, enter the total linear feet, then add the miters, end caps, outlets, downspout, elbows, brackets and hangers from the accessories step with the counts you made. Send it as a quote request with your notes, and we check the list against the runs before anything is cut.
